About Me

Hi there! My name is Ed and I'm a professional performing musician and educator. I have taught music lessons for over 10 years to all ages and skill levels on piano, guitar, and bass. My passion for music led me to pursue a Bachelor of Music Degree (Jazz Piano) from St. Francis Xavier University. Upon finishing my degree, I worked on cruise ships playing piano before settling in western Canada as a freelance musician and educator. I have experience in a wide range of musical styles from jazz to classical, and have played in rock, salsa, reggae, country, and folk groups. Currently, I perform full-time with the Derina Harvey Band, a touring Celtic-rock act. Teaching keeps me busy when I'm not touring, as I love to inspire people to discover their own musical abilities!I've helped lots of people realize their musical goals over the years, whether that goal is to strum a guitar around a campfire or it's to learn a tough classical piano piece - and I can help you too!

What you can expect

  • What happens in a lesson? Lessons are always structured around what you want to learn. Each lesson will cover everything from learning your favourite songs, to technique, music theory, ear training and tips on how to practice effectively.

  • Is there a strict curriculum? No. However, I do recommend particular music books for children. I use a hybrid approach to teaching which involves some method books and sheet music for any songs they like. If you are an adult learner, we start by having a chat about your goals and make a plan of action to get you there!

  • What materials do I need? I may ask you to buy a few books (e.g. the Piano Adventures series for young learners on piano) but I also provide many materials free via email. You should have something to organize all of your lesson materials, a metronome, and of course your instrument and an internet connection!

  • How frequent are lessons scheduled? Weekly. Custom scheduling can be requested, based on the situation.

  • More questions? Just ask! Email me
